PEMBROKE, NC STREETSCAPE & DOWNTOWN MASTER PLAN
Allison Platt & Associates led a team to develop a master plan for downtown Pembroke, NC. Although the community is small (2,500) it is home to University of North Carolina Pembroke and the largest population of Lumbee Indians anywhere (~86% of the population). The Lumber River, which flows through the southern edge of the community, is a nationally recognized Wild and Scenic River and the river near Pembroke is part of the Lumber River State Park. The Town wishes to capitalize on these assets and attract more visitors, students, faculty, and residents to the downtown by improving the appearance of the area. The master plan delineates streetscape improvements in the historic core area and provides design guidelines to improve the commercial corridors between the downtown, the Tribe headquarters, and the University. The plan includes conceptual design for the streetscape improvements, preliminary cost estimates, funding strategies, and a recommended first phase of work. The master plan document can be accessed here.
